The S2L framework works as an auxiliary branch of the UnSchool Challenge experience.  All students deserve the right to engage in work that matters.  Many times finding that work starts with following your heart.  Why can't students attain academic credit, practice skills, build networks, and gain exposure to careers in the context of helping others?  We think they can and that it's their right to do so.
